June 2021 – MeLIot Press Release
Boreal Laser, the Canadian industrial gas sensor company based in Alberta and AMPER S&C IoT,
a Spanish Company with offices in Montreal will jointly develop the next generation of smart
methane gas leak monitoring solution targeted at the oil & gas industry.
The leakage of natural gas into the atmosphere results not only in billions of dollars of product
loss to producers, but also contributes considerably to global warming. North America alone has
more than 2 million gas wells from which significant gas loss regularly occurs. Government and
Industry have called for new cost-effective technology for monitoring well leaks in real time and
before they result in safety incidents.
Addressing this market need, Boreal Laser and S&C are developing a solution combining their
expertise in gas sensing hardware, Internet of Things, software platforms, and Artificial
Intelligence. Boreal Laser will develop a new low-cost laser methane leak sensor and S&C apply
wireless IoT to monitor laser sensors using a cloud based software platform. Customers will be
able to monitor their gas infrastructures remotely and receive leak maps and be alerted to major
leaks in real time.
Both partners expect to target the huge market opportunity for natural gas leak monitoring by
offering an innovative solution at a very competitive price compared to other solutions in the
market. Through this collaboration, the two companies aim to improve their international
competitivity and foster growth in their North American and European market.
