Last Friday, June 21, in St. John’s, Newfoundland, we gathered to honor the memory of 21 brave sailors who lost their lives in the tragic sinking of the fishing vessel Villa de Pitanxo in February 2022.
Together with the Honorable Alfredo Martinez, Ambassador of Spain to Canada, and local Newfoundland authorities, we celebrated the unveiling of the “Dos Orillas” sculpture, donated by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Canada in coordination with the Embassy of Spain. This work by artist Arturo Berned symbolizes the resilience and enduring legacy of the sailors and the profound connection between Spain and Canada.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our members and to the trustee companies of the Chamber whose support made this donation possible.
To the families present, and to those who could not join us, we offer our heartfelt condolences. We know that no words can ease your pain, but we hope this tangible gesture provides some comfort and stands as a testament to the respect and admiration we hold for your loved ones.
This sculpture is not just a monument, but a beacon of hope and remembrance. As we look upon it, let us remember not only the tragedy of their loss but also the richness of their lives, their bravery, and the eternal bond between our communities.
May the memory of the sailors of the Villa de Pitanxo live on in our hearts and minds forever.
